Central Turns to 70

Central Baptist Church Celebrates 70 Years of Second Chances and Community Impact

Central Baptist Church, located on Fairview Avenue in Daytona Beach, will celebrate its 70th anniversary on Sunday, September 28 at 10:30 a.m., with a special worship service followed by a community luncheon.

Known throughout the region as a “church of second chances,” Central has long been a sanctuary for those seeking healing, hope, and belonging—regardless of their past. The church’s legacy of compassion and justice was shaped by the late Rev. Hal Marchman, a beloved community leader who served as Central’s pastor for many years. Rev. Marchman was instrumental in co-founding the Stewart Marchman Treatment Center, and served as chaplain for the Daytona International Speedway, forging a unique bond between faith and motorsports.

Today, Central continues to live out its mission of radical welcome and recovery. The church hosts AA and Al-Anon meetings, and offers a Wednesday night gathering specifically designed to provide space for those who have been hurt by church or are seeking spiritual community outside traditional structures.

“Our story is one of grace, grit, and growth,” said Rev. Sonny Gallman, Pastor of Central Baptist Church. “As we celebrate 70 years, we’re not just looking back—we’re looking forward to continuing our work in recovery, justice, and unconditional welcome.”

The anniversary service will feature music, reflection, and stories from Central’s rich history, followed by a luncheon open to all attendees.
